Embracing Matrescence
Motherhood brings with it a profound transformation, a stage of life called matrescence. Much like adolescence, it’s a time of major shifts—hormonal, emotional, and psychological—that shape a woman’s identity. It’s filled with incredible highs and some deep, challenging lows, but that duality is what makes it so uniquely powerful.
The Societal Narrative:
🤱🏼 Breastfeeding struggles? "Just switch to formula."
💤 Newborn won’t sleep? "Buy a high-tech, self-rocking bassinet."
👖 Not fitting into pre-pregnancy jeans? "Try this diet, pill, or weight-loss plan."
🍷 Feeling overwhelmed? "A glass of wine or anti-anxiety medication will help."
These messages aren’t inherently wrong—every mother needs to find what works for her family—but they perpetuate the idea that struggle is unacceptable. They tell us we should bypass the discomfort rather than lean into it.
The Reality of Matrescence:
Motherhood is inherently challenging. It’s a season of profound change, where your body, brain, and heart are working overtime to adjust to your new role. And guess what? That’s okay. The challenges don’t mean you’re failing—they mean you’re growing.
A Holistic Perspective on Matrescence and Postpartum:
Instead of rushing to "fix" the hard parts, consider this:
Rest: Your body has just done something miraculous. Honor it by slowing down.
Support: Surround yourself with a community that uplifts and understands you.
Nourishment: Choose foods and habits that rebuild and replenish your energy.
Acceptance: Embrace the impermanence of this phase. Like all seasons, it will pass.
When we stop fighting the transformation and start flowing with it, we find peace. It’s in this acceptance that we unlock the power of matrescence—not as something to endure but as something to cherish.
Motherhood is messy, magical, and meaningful. By leaning into this season with intention and grace, we discover resilience we never knew we had. So, if you’re in the throes of matrescence, know this: you’re not alone, you’re not failing, and you’re exactly where you need to be.
